Here we have a consecutive pair of Shield Nickels dated 1868 and 1869. The Shield Nickel, minted from 1866 to 1883, was the first U.S. five-cent piece made of nickel, featuring a shield on the obverse and a large numeral "5" surrounded by stars on the reverse.
