    The $1 Liberty Head was the first $1.00 gold coin struck by the US Mint. It was first produced in the year 1849 on the heels of the California gold rush. Minting continued until 1889. The $1 Liberty has a composition of 90% gold (.04837 troy oz) and 10% copper.
