Minted from 1883 to 1912
The First year of issue, 1883, created quite a controversy, as the denomination "Five Cents" was not placed on the coin. Later in that year 1883, the coin was redesigned and the word –CENTS- was placed on the reverse so that the Nickel when gold-plated would not look so similar to a $5.00 Gold Coin.
Until 1912, all Liberty Nickels were struck at the Philadelphia Mint, but in that last year of the series, small quantities were also struck at Denver and San Francisco. This series has many dates that are affordable to acquire, with a few KEYS and semi-KEYS to add challenge to your goal. Start assembling a complete set, a date set, or choose the NO "CENTS" and a with "CENTS" variety for your Type Set.
