Minted 1938 to date
A fun series to collect, perfect for the novice as well as advanced collector. Designed by Felix Schlag and first minted in 1938, this is a very popular and collectible series! From late 1942 through 1945, the Jefferson Nickel was struck in a silver alloy, to make more copper and nickel available for the war effort. To distinguish this variety, a large mintmark was placed on the reverse over the image of Monticello, the first time that a P-mint was placed on a U.S. coin. There are a number of Key dates, including the 1939-D, 1939-S, 1942-D, and 1950-D. The reverse was redesigned in 2004 and 2005 to celebrate the Westward Expansion of America and the Lewis and Clark Expedition. The 2006 issue reverted back to the Jefferson Memorial reverse, but with an updated image of Jefferson on the obverse.
